How to Apply Enamel Paints

Any finish that’s designed to be left unvarnished which makes up a very large category of wood finishes can have enamel paint applied over it. However, you’ll have to first sand and prime any existing finish. When it comes to applying enamel paints, primer is key. It creates a smooth surface upon which you can apply your desired color(s) of paint with ease. Even if you don’t want to (or think you don’t need to) varnish your piece of furniture once you’ve finished painting it. Moreover, be sure to use a primer before laying down one coat of your chosen enamel paint color. Allow that coat to dry completely before doing any layering.

You should give at least two coats of spray paint total. Repeat as necessary until your object is covered in whatever colors are appropriate for its purpose. If using more than one layer of spray paint as part of a DIY project, always make sure each layer dries completely before adding another. And remember don’t forget to thoroughly wipe off all wet. Or damp objects after applying your layers so that they’re not exposed to too much moisture while still wet. Otherwise, you risk ruining them!

Where Can You Use It?

If you have old furniture or something that could use a new coat of paint, enamel paint is an affordable way to breathe new life into it. Plus, unlike many other types of paint, the enamel is easier to apply and can be used to do large projects in much less time than you might imagine. Additionally, the enamel’s water-based and contains no lead or VOCs (volatile organic compounds). It’s more environmentally friendly than some other paints. And as we know, recycling resources whenever possible not only helps preserve our planet but also saves us money in the long run.

Before and After

One of our favorite ways to give the furniture an inexpensive makeover is by using enamel paint. It’s a fast, easy way to completely change your piece in a day or two. This dresser started out tired and drab; it had been painted at least once, maybe more. After painting it with chalkboard paint, adding new hardware, and swapping out some of its handles, we had a brand new piece that was far from boring! If you have a favorite dresser that needs some TLC. Or if you just want to change up your decor for winter—this is one project we’d highly recommend. Just follow these steps to get started
